Anise Hyssop

Also known as Licorice. Grows to 3-4 feet tall with 4 to 5-inch spikes of purple flowers at top. Leaves are dark green and arrow-shaped with a nice strong licorice flavor. Dry leaves and flowers are used in potpourris, arrangements, and drinks. Blooms in summer, the same year from seed. Very similar to Korean Mint.

Germination: 7-30 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 65-70ºF

Seed Planting Depth:  Sow on the surface, needs light to germinate

Starting Indoors:  Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Provide 65-70ºF soil temperatures. Transplant after the last frost, 8-12" apart. 

Sowing Outdoors: After the last frost when the soil temperature reaches 65-70ºF. Sow a few seeds every 12-18"

Growth Habit: Upright, branching

Spacing: 12-18” apart

Light Needs: Full sun 

Soil Needs:  Sandy loam, tolerates most soils

Uses: Culinary and medicinal, Flowers attract bees and beneficials.

Care: Pinching back seedlings encourages branching, resulting in more leaves. Harvest regularly to keep the plant producing new leaves.
